INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM (SKIN):

Function: Protects The body by preventing loss of water, holds moisture   in.
 Protects from injury and infection, keeps stuff in and out.
 Helps regulate the body temperature, thermoregulator.
 Eliminates waste, sweat.
 Gathers information about the environment, through nerves.    (pressure, pain & temp.)
 Produces Vitamin D (sunlight needed)

Structure: Two layered
 Epidermis: outermost layer. Epitheleal tissue.
   Has no nerves or blood vessels. Thin layer (2mm)

  Melanin: in epidermis. Produces color substance pigment
   the more melanin, the darker the skin.
   Exposure to the sun stimulates melanin production.

 Dermis: Lower layer of skin. Thicker than epidermis.
   Connective tissue. Has nerves and blood vessels.
   Feels heat, cold, pain and pressure. Hands, lips and soles    have most nerves.
 

 Hair: living cells in hair follicle, non living further out.
  protects the body from ultraviolet light
  keeps particles off the skin
  color from melanin. most from black melanin unless red hair-red   melanin.

 Nails: protect ends so can stay soft for touch.
  epitheleal tissue.

Keeping the skin healthy: proper diet, drink enough water, limit sun    exposure & keep skin clean and dry.

Damage: blisters, cuts, genetic make-up: tumors,cancer
